About Baring Wilderness Area
Baring Wilderness Area is a 4,579-acre federally protected wilderness in Maine, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This is true backcountry—primitive and roadless, with no motorized travel, mechanized equipment, or developed infrastructure. What you'll find is quiet forest and a chance to experience the landscape on foot, with solitude as a defining feature of the place.
Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore here. The wilderness demands Leave No Trace ethics: pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and travel lightly. There are no maintained facilities, marked trail networks, or visitor services—access is minimal and routes require navigation skill and self-sufficiency. Seasonal snow and mud are real factors; spring and fall can be wet, and winter closes the area for most visitors. Check with the managing agency for current access information and any seasonal closures before you go.
