South Boone is a hard hike in Wyoming's Caribou-Targhee National Forest, on the Ashton/Island Park Ranger District. The trail is an out-and-back of about 14 miles, with a one-way elevation gain of 1,778 feet, taking you from a low point of about 6,538 feet to a high of about 8,398 feet. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trailhead is at South Boone Creek. The route is natural-surface and not accessible. Horses are allowed, but bikes are not. The trail is open year-round, and the parking area is named South Boone Creek Trailhead. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Snake River, which sits about 1,500 feet lower, show July highs around 77°F with lows near 38°F. At the trail's higher end, temperatures run cooler. Hominy Peak is about 1.6 miles away, and Conant Pass Trail and Teton Crest are each about 3.8 miles off. Squirrel Meadows Cabin, about 4.3 miles away, offers a place to stay.
