Double Cabin Cutacross is an easy out-and-back hike in Wyoming's Shoshone National Forest, on the Wind River Ranger District. The trail is short, about 1.2 miles round trip, and gains just 26 feet from its lowest point at 8,060 feet to the high point at 8,090 feet. It is a natural-surface trail, and it is open year-round at the Double Cabin Trailhead, which sits about 0.2 miles from Double Cabin Campground. The trail is suitable for hikers, and it also allows horses and bikes. That makes it a practical base for exploring the area on foot, on horseback or on two wheels. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical July highs reach about 79°F with lows near 43°F, based on averages from a nearby weather station in Dubois. That station sits roughly 1,135 feet lower than the trail, so temperatures on the cutacross run a bit cooler. Several other outings lie close by.
