Lower Field is a short, easy cross-country ski route in Wisconsin, about 2.3 miles from the town of Middleton. The trail is only 0.15 miles long, and the climb is minimal, with a total gain of 11 feet and a total loss of 16 feet over the course of the run. It is an easy outing, and the route is so short that it works well as a quick addition to a longer day on the snow. Winter is the natural season for this kind of skiing. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Charmany Farm show January highs around 26°F with lows near 10°F, while February runs about 31°F by day and 13°F at night. The station sits a few dozen feet lower than the trail, so temperatures on the field may run slightly cooler. Several other ski routes lie within a tenth of a mile, including Upper Field, Challenger and Pleasant View. For a change of pace, the Sugar River offers canoeing about 6.5 miles away.
