About Historic National Road

Historic National Road is a 19.3-mile All-American Road in West Virginia, running from Wheeling through a string of small communities including Bridgeport, Brookside, West Alexander, Valley Grove, Triadelphia and Bethlehem. It is a scenic drive rather than a single trail, and its length makes it a natural base for a day of exploring the towns along the way. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable times to drive it. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Wheeling show May highs around 74°F and September highs near 79°F, with fewer wet days in September than in spring. The road also makes a good starting point for other outings close to it. Little Wheeling Creek offers canoeing just 0.1 mile from the route, and the Popcorn Boulder and Northern Panhandle climbing areas sit about 0.2 mile away. Bear Rock Lake Bouldering (Wheeling) is roughly 1.8 miles off.
