North East Area is a climbing area in West Virginia, set within Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area on land managed by the State Department of Natural Resources. It sits about a tenth of a mile from Devil's Nose, another climbing area, which makes it easy to pair the two on a single visit. The area has five routes, four of them sport and one mixed, with grades ranging from 5.8 to 5.10b. Wave Crest is the easiest at 5.8, and Alluring Fire is the hardest at 5.10b. Radical Fun Times is the mixed route. All are rated in the 5.8 to 5.10b range, so the area works well for climbers looking for a range of options on a single outing. For timing, late spring and early fall are the most comfortable. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show May highs around 73°F and September highs around 77°F, with July peaking near 85°F. Hikers can find the Maverick Trail about half a mile away and the Tuscarora Trail under a mile off. Whites Knob Trail is about 2.7 miles away, and the Hancock Aqueducts in Maryland are roughly 6.3 miles away.
