Newport: Walnut Street

Newport: Walnut Street is a public access point to Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island, set within the Walnut St. Driftway about half a mile from the center of Newport. It's a simple way down to the water from town. Summer brings the warmest conditions. Typical averages from the Newport Rose weather station, 1.5 miles away, show July highs around 77°F and August highs around 78°F, with lows in the mid-60s. June and September are only slightly cooler, with highs in the low 70s. Spring warms slowly, from highs near 55°F in April to about 65°F in May. October averages highs around 63°F. Winter is cold, with January highs near 39°F and lows in the mid-20s, and a few snowy days from December through March. Rain is spread fairly evenly across the year, with roughly 9 to 12 wet days each month. The Cliff Walk, about 2.7 miles away, is the closest trail and pairs well with a stop at the bay. The Surfers Egg climbing area lies about 2.8 miles out. The Ocean View Loop Trail and Flint Point Loop Trail are both a little over 4 miles from the access point.
