About West Cascades Scenic Byway

West Cascades Scenic Byway is a 193.7-mile drive through Oregon that carries three designations: National Scenic Byway, National Forest Scenic Byway, and Oregon State Scenic Byway. Part of the route crosses national forest land, and it passes through the towns of Estacada, Detroit, Idanha and Westfir, which make convenient points to start, stop or break up the trip. At nearly 194 miles, this is a long day behind the wheel or a natural fit for a multi-day trip with overnights along the way. The towns strung along the corridor give it a clear sequence from Estacada through Detroit and Idanha to Westfir. Summer is the driest and warmest stretch. Typical averages from a nearby weather station outside Estacada show July and August highs in the low 80s with lows around 54°F and only four or five wet days a month, while winter months see rain on about 20 days. Recreation sits right alongside the road. Humbug Flats is a short hike, Hard Rock Campground offers a place to stay, the Breitenbush River is a paddling option, and the Moolack climbing area is less than half a mile from the route.
