About Mt. Hood Scenic Byway
Mt. Hood Scenic Byway is a 98.1-mile route in Oregon that holds two designations: National Scenic Byway and Oregon State Scenic Byway. It runs through a long string of communities, starting near Troutdale, Fairview, Wood Village and Gresham. From there it continues through Orient, Sandy, Rhododendron and Government Camp. It then passes Parkdale, Mount Hood, Odell and Hood River and reaches Bingen. The western end makes a reasonable starting point for timing a trip. Typical averages from a weather station in Troutdale, at 33 feet, show July and August highs around 81°F with lows near 56°F, while January highs sit around 44°F. The station sits near sea level, so expect cooler temperatures where the byway climbs higher, around Government Camp. Plenty of stops sit right along the road. Still Creek and Nottingham campgrounds offer places to stay. Laurel Hill Chute is a short hike, and the Zigzag River is an option for paddlers.
