Turpentine is a hard hike of about 11 miles on natural trail in the Detroit Ranger District of Willamette National Forest in Oregon, managed by the Forest Service. The trail starts at roughly 4,600 feet and climbs to about 5,170 feet, with a steady grade that peaks at about 30% around 3.4 miles out. The round trip adds up to about 2,350 feet of gain and loss. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the Santiam Junction weather station, about 8 miles away, put July and August highs near 76°F with lows around 42°F. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures up high run cooler. The Turpentine Lake Trail (unofficial) and Pine Ridge both lie about 0.2 miles away, and Temple Lake is about 1.3 miles off. Marion Forks Campground is about 3.8 miles away.
