Swampy Lakes Trail #23 is an easy, short hike in Oregon's Deschutes National Forest, within the Bend/Fort Rock Ranger District. The trail is out and back, with a total length of about 1.4 miles and a one-way climb of 228 feet. The high point is about 5583 feet, and the steepest section comes early, around 0.29 miles from the start, with a grade of about 13 percent. The Forest Service manages the land. The trail sits a little above 5300 feet, and the nearest town is Sunriver, about 12 miles away. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical July highs reach about 84°F with lows near 41°F, based on averages from a nearby weather station in Sunriver. That station sits about 1400 feet lower than the trail, so temperatures on the trail run cooler. The trip takes about half an hour. South Fork Trail #25 starts just 0.1 mile away, and Swampy Loop is about 0.9 mile off. Climbers can head to Cougar Buttress, about 2 miles away, and Three Creeks Lake Campground is roughly 5.5 miles from the trail.
