Azure Mountain is a climbing area in the Debar Mountain Wild Forest in New York, managed by the State Department of Conservation. It offers traditional routes on a range of grades, from the low 5.4s up to 5.12b, and is a destination for climbers looking for a variety of classic trad climbs. The area has nine routes in total, and the climbing is all traditional. Among them, You're No Spring Chicken Head is a 5.4 first climbed by Jon Bassett in 1988, Planet Claire is a 5.6, and Chasing the Scream is a 5.12b first ascended by Adam Crofoot in 2019. The median grade runs around 5.8+, so the area suits climbers comfortable with mid-range to harder trad routes. Summer is the most comfortable time to climb. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Saranac run to highs of about 77°F in July and 75°F in August, with July lows near 51°F. That station sits well below the summit, so temperatures on the mountain run cooler. For a change of pace, the Kettle Trail is about 10 miles away and offers hiking in the same part of the forest.
