Mamakating O&W Rail Trail is a short mountain biking route in New York's Bashakill WMA, managed by the State Department of Conservation. It is an easy ride, about 0.6 miles out and back, with no elevation gain, and it sits within a few tenths of a mile of the town of Bashakill. The trail is a low-commitment outing. The climb profile is front-loaded, with the steepest grade of about 3% near the start, and the whole trip stays within about 500 feet of elevation. Dogs are allowed on a leash. For comfortable weather, late spring through early fall works best. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run from highs around 70°F in May to about 82°F in July, with September easing back to the low 70s. Basher Kill, a canoeing spot, lies about 0.4 miles away. The D&H Canal Towpath Trail is the closest place to check out if you want to plan a longer day on foot or by bike.
