The James R. Kanik Calcium Trail is a public foot/bike/sk/exercisei trail in northern New York, about 1.9 miles from the town of Calcium. It is maintained by the Development Authority of the North Country and is open to foot traffic, biking, skiing and exercise, with no motor vehicles or horses allowed. The trail is an out-and-back route that covers about 4 miles, with a total elevation gain of 142 feet from the start to the high point at 459 feet. The climb is gentle, with a steepest grade of about 3% near mile 0.87. Summer and early fall are the most comfortable times to visit. Typical averages from the nearby Watertown weather station show July highs around 80°F and September highs around 72°F, while winter brings highs near 30°F and regular snow days. Nearby, the Black River Trail is about 3.3 miles away and the Wiley Yellow Trail about 3.9 miles. The Warrior Trail and Wiley Blue Trail are both about 4.2 miles off.
