Old Mid Mesa is a short, easy hike in the Aldo Leopold Wilderness, part of the Wilderness Ranger District of Gila National Forest in southern New Mexico. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail lies within the designated wilderness area. The hike is an out-and-back of about 3.6 miles, with a low point near 7,578 feet and a high of about 7,780 feet. The one-way climb is about 187 feet, so the whole trip adds up to roughly 374 feet of elevation gain. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Winston, NM, put May and September highs around 79°F, while July and August bring the most wet days. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the mesa run cooler. Several other trails start within a few miles, including Me Own Trail #707 and Black Canyon Bypass, both about 1.7 miles away, and Tom Moore Canyon Trail #708 at about 2.4 miles. Black Canyon Campground - Upper is about 3 miles away for overnight stays.
