Apache Spring Trail is a hard hike in the Bandelier Wilderness, inside Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico. It is a 12-mile out-and-back that climbs about 1,700 feet from the trail's low point at 7,019 feet to a high of 8,673 feet, and the National Park Service manages the land. The trail starts in a cluster of routes. The Frijoles Trail, the Ponderosa Trail and the Frijoles Rim Trail all lie about a tenth of a mile away. That makes it easy to pair Apache Spring Trail with a short stretch on one of those. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. A nearby weather station at Los Alamos, at about the same elevation as the high point, typically averages highs in the mid-70s from June through August, with July the warmest and wettest month. Winter there is cold, with typical highs in the mid-30s and lows near 9 degrees. A fee is charged for this hike. Plan for about a day on the trail.
