Black Canyon Campground - Upper is a remote Forest Service campground in the Wilderness Ranger District of Gila National Forest in New Mexico, about 30 miles from the Wilderness Ranger District office. It sits along Forest Road 150 (North Star Road), the first camping area you reach as you drive in, and is visible from the entrance road. The forest recommends high-clearance 4x4 vehicles on Forest Road 150. The upper campground is not reservable, so plan on arriving and securing a spot on site. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to visit. Typical averages from the nearby Gila Hot Springs weather station show April highs around 73°F and October highs around 75°F, while July and August bring highs near 89°F and the most wet days of the year. Black Canyon Campground - Lower is just 0.2 miles away, and Black Canyon Trail #94 starts about 0.3 miles off. Middle Mesa Trail #716 and Tom Moore Canyon Trail #708 are both within about a mile and a half.
