Prickly is a hard out-and-back hike in the Lincoln Ranger District of the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest in western Montana. The trail runs about 10 miles, climbing from a low point of 5,494 feet to a high of 7,498 feet, which means the total gain is roughly 3,000 feet. Bikes are allowed on the natural-surface route. For a longer trip, plan for a full day. The trail isn't accessible, so it suits hikers who want a challenge rather than a quick outing. Washington Gulch Trail lies about 1.5 miles away, and Helmville - Gould Trail and Nevada Creek Trail are both within a few miles. Granite Butte Lookout, about 5.7 miles off, offers a place to camp.
