Elk Park is a hard out-and-back hike in the Helena Ranger District of the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest in western Montana. The trail stretches about 10.8 miles, with an elevation gain of 1,595 feet from a low point of about 6,900 feet to a high of around 8,130 feet. The Forest Service manages the land. The route is a natural-surface trail that is open year-round. Bikes and horses are both allowed, so it works for riding as well as hiking. The climb is significant. The trail rises steadily through the route, with the most gain coming in the second half of the trip. That makes it a challenge for a full-day outing, so plan on time for both the climb and the descent. The closest neighbors are the 114 Moose Creek Trail and Moose Creek mountain biking areas, about 1.7 miles away, and the Golden Age Cutoff and Manley Park hikes, about 1.8 miles away. For an overnight stay, Tizer/Montgomery Park is about 5 miles off.
