Baldy Mountain is an expert-level out-and-back hike in Montana's Lolo National Forest, within the Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District. The trailhead is called Baldy Mountain Trailhead, and the route is about 5.6 miles long with a total elevation gain of 3,940 feet. The climb starts at a low point of about 5,040 feet and reaches a high point of 6,929 feet. The steepest stretch comes at about 0.66 miles in, with a grade of about 39 percent. The trail is open year-round, and the Forest Service manages the surrounding land. Bikes and horses are both allowed, and the surface is natural. Plan for about four hours on the trip. The Little Thompson River, a canoeing spot, lies about 6.7 miles away, and the Tepee Creek hike is about 9.3 miles away.
