Caribou Campground is a Forest Service campground in the Three Rivers Ranger District of Montana's Kootenai National Forest. It sits in the backcountry of northwest Montana, about 0.3 miles from the Caribou Mountain hike, which makes it an easy base for exploring the surrounding peaks. Vault toilets are the only facility on site, and the campground is not reservable. That makes it a good choice for a spontaneous trip rather than a planned one. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show July and August highs around 81°F with lows in the low 40s, and those months also see the fewest wet days of the year. Winters are cold, with January highs near 29°F and lows around 14°F. Several hikes lie within a few miles, including Grubstake Mountain at 3.3 miles and Dodge Summit Trail at 3.6 miles. Paddlers can head to the Yaak River, about 6.5 miles away, and Upper Ford Cabin Rental offers another camping option at 7.7 miles.
