Merrymeeting is a ski touring route in western Maine, about 3.5 miles from the town of Hale. It is an out-and-back climb of roughly 1.5 miles, with a total elevation gain of about 1,740 feet. The route starts at a low point of about 1,367 feet and reaches a high point of about 2,254 feet. The steepest stretch comes at about 0.65 miles in, with a grade of about 31 percent. Winter is the natural season for this kind of outing. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Rumford, which sits well below the route, show January highs around 27°F and lows near 7°F. That station's figures are not adjusted for the higher elevation, so temperatures on the summit run cooler. Several other ski touring routes lie close by. Bearclaw is about 0.6 miles away, Horseshoe glade about a mile, and Waterfall and Smokestack each about 1.3 miles. For a hike, the Starr Trail (yellow) is about 3.2 miles off.
