Whitman Valley is an easy out-and-back hike in Maine's Deboullie area, on land managed by State Park and Recreation. The route runs 1.32 miles each way, about 2.6 miles round trip, starting at roughly 1,230 feet. The trail gains about 340 feet one way and about 475 feet over the full round trip, since the route dips and rises along the way. Its low point sits near 1,180 feet and the high point near 1,525 feet. The steepest pitch comes early, at about a tenth of a mile in, where the grade reaches about 14 percent. After that, the climbing is gentler, which keeps the outing well within reach for most hikers. Summer is the most comfortable season. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Allagash put July highs around 77°F with lows near 52°F. That station sits more than 900 feet below the trail, so temperatures up here run cooler. Several other trails start close by. Denny Trail is just 0.1 mile away, Gardner Loop Trail and Tower Trail are within about half a mile, and Whitman Ridge is about 1.4 miles off, making it easy to string together a longer day in Deboullie.
