Third Mountain Trail is a 3.9-mile moderate hike in northern Maine, on land managed by the National Park Service within the Appalachian National Scenic Trail corridor. The route is an out-and-back, with a total round-trip distance of about 8 miles and a total climb of about 2,400 feet. The high point on the trail reaches 1,864 feet, and the low point sits at 1,056 feet. The hike takes about four hours. There is no fee to go, so you can plan a day here without an entry charge. Summer and early fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Greenville, at a lower elevation, show July highs around 75°F and September highs around 66°F, with lows in the upper 40s. That station sits well below the trail, so expect temperatures on the route to run cooler. The Gorman Loop Trail starts just 0.2 miles away, and the Appalachian Trail passes within about a third of a mile.
