About Red River Gorge Scenic Byway

Red River Gorge Scenic Byway is a 44.6-mile drive in Kentucky that carries two designations: it is both a National Scenic Byway and a Kentucky State Scenic Byway. The route passes through the town of Stanton. The drive runs about 45 miles end to end. It works as a base for a day of hiking, climbing or paddling, since many trailheads and crags sit right along the road. Fall is the most comfortable time to go. Typical October highs run near 69°F with lows around 43°F, and September averages the fewest wet days of the year, based on normals from a nearby weather station outside Stanton. Several places sit within a short distance of the road. The Sheltowee Trace NRT #100 and Tower Rock Trail #229 both lie about a tenth of a mile away. Climbers can reach Northern Gorge at a similar distance, and the Middle Fork Red River lies about 0.2 miles off for canoeing.
