About Highway of Legends
Highway of Legends is an 80.9-mile National Forest Scenic Byway in Colorado, managed by the Forest Service and also designated a Colorado Scenic & Historic Byway. The route links a string of small towns, including Trinidad, Jansen, Cokedale, Valdez, Segundo, Weston, Stonewall Gap, La Veta and Walsenburg, so it works well as a drive with stops along the way rather than a single stretch of road. For comfortable weather, aim for late spring or early fall. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Trinidad show May highs around 74°F and September highs around 80°F, while July highs reach about 88°F and winter highs sit near 49°F. Several places sit right off the road. La Veta Pines RV Park and Yucca Campground offer camping, and the Trinchera Peak hike starts close by. Paddlers can head to the Purgatoire River, about 0.6 miles from the route.
