Middle Area is a climbing area in Mt. Gower Preserve, a county-managed preserve in California. It sits among several other climbing spots, with Mt. Gower just 0.1 mile away and Quiet Oaks Boulders 0.2 mile off, so it works well as a stop on a day spent exploring the preserve's rock. The area has nine routes, split between sport climbing and bouldering. Sport routes run from 5.7 to 5.11b/c, with Yucca Crack at 5.7 and Timber at 5.11b/c. Bouldering is also an option, with grades in the V1 to V2-3 range. The mixed route No Flatlanders adds a third style. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show May highs around 77°F and October highs around 82°F, while July and August average in the low 90s. That station sits about 640 feet lower than the preserve, so temperatures here run cooler. Nearby, the San Vicente Creek trail is 0.6 mile away and the Watt walking path is 1.1 mile off. For a change of pace, the Gunstage trail for mountain biking is 1.5 miles away.
