Lower Kern River Canyon is a climbing area in California's Sequoia National Forest, within the Kern River Ranger District. The Forest Service manages the land, and the area sits among a cluster of climbing and hiking destinations in the Kern River corridor. The canyon holds about 20 routes, with sport climbing the most common style. Grades run from 5.4 to 5.10c, and mixed climbing is also represented. Among the named routes are Dihedral Fun (5.4, trad), Jimmy clean (5.9, sport) and Crumbly Unknown (5.10c, mixed). Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Glennville show May highs around 72°F and October highs around 73°F, while July and August average highs near 89°F. That station sits about 1,260 feet lower than the canyon, so temperatures here run cooler. Owl Rock, a climbing area, is about 2 miles away, and the Stark hike is a similar distance. Oak Flat Lookout offers camping about 3 miles off, and the Powerhouse hike is just beyond it.
