The Dead Zone is a climbing area on Bureau of Land Management land within the Barstow Field Office in California. It sits among a cluster of other climbing spots, with The Launch Pad and The Apostle Pillars each about 0.1 mile away, and The Tomb at a similar distance. The area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The climbing here is sport and trad, with five routes in total. Four are sport and one is trad. The grades run from 5.9 to 5.11a, with Buried at Sea and Till the Sun Comes Up at 5.9, Tell Me a Story at 5.10c, and Capsized at 5.11a. Ship-Shape is the trad route at 5.9. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Hesperia show April highs around 75°F and October highs around 80°F, while July and August average about 97°F. That station sits a few hundred feet lower than the climbing area, so temperatures up high run a little cooler.
