Red Mountain is a 6.2-mile out-and-back hike in California's Sierra National Forest, within the High Sierra Ranger District. The Forest Service manages the land, and the route starts at 7,881 feet, climbing to 8,738 feet at the high point with a steady, moderate grade of about 18% on the steepest stretch near the beginning. The total elevation gain is 1,569 feet, and the hike takes about three hours. The most comfortable time to go is late summer. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Mammoth Lakes show July highs around 78°F and lows near 49°F, while winter highs sit around 41°F with lows in the teens. Strawberry Lake is about 1.6 miles away, and Grouse Creek, a mountain biking trailhead, is about 2.1 miles off. Pitman Creek, a canoeing spot, lies about 3 miles away, and College campground is about 3.4 miles from the trail.
