Talon's Grip Area
Talon's Grip Area is a climbing area in Arizona on county land within a proposed open space, about 0.1 mile from the Penguinland Area, The Roost Area and The Face of God. The area is managed by the county and sits among several other climbing spots, making it easy to pair with a visit to one of the neighboring crags. The climbing here is a mix of sport, trad and mixed routes, with five routes listed in total. The grades run from 5.8 to 5.12-, with Talon's Grip (aka Nestor) at 5.12- and Peregrin's Prey at 5.11+ as the hardest options. Covey Up is a trad route at 5.8, and The Perch is a mixed route at 5.9. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to climb. Typical averages from the nearby Superior weather station show April highs around 78°F and October highs around 84°F, while July highs reach about 99°F. That station sits roughly 1,450 feet lower than the area, so temperatures on the crag run cooler. Oak Flat campground is about 2.6 miles away, and the Legends of Superior Trail is about 3.1 miles off.
