Upper Grant is a hard hike in the Alpine Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in eastern Arizona, managed by the Forest Service. The route is an out-and-back of about 8.7 miles, with a one-way climb of roughly 1,600 feet. The total gain and loss over the round trip are each about 3,550 feet, and the steepest stretch comes at about 2.5 miles in, with a grade of 19 percent. The trail is natural-surface and not accessible. Bikes are not allowed. For timing, late spring and early fall are the most comfortable. Typical averages from the Alpine weather station, about 18 miles away, show May highs near 69°F and October highs near 64°F, while July and August bring the most wet days. Several other destinations sit close by. The Clell Lee Loop and Steeple Trail #73 are each about 0.8 miles away, and Hannagan Campground is about 1.1 miles off. Aker Lake Fishing Site is about 1.8 miles away.
