About Cuchara Basin
Cuchara Basin, located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of southern Colorado, is an abandoned ski area that once served as a regional winter destination. Though no longer operating as a commercial resort, the basin and surrounding peaks remain accessible for backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, and summer hiking. The area sits at elevation between 9,000 and 11,000 feet, offering reliable snow accumulation during winter months and a verdant alpine environment in summer. The basin's terrain features rolling slopes and tree-lined runs typical of Colorado's southern ranges, with views toward the Spanish Peaks and surrounding wilderness.
