Trinity National Forest

Trinity National Forest encompasses nearly half a million acres of public land in California, managed by the Forest Service for multiple-use recreation. The forest supports a mix of outdoor pursuits year-round: hiking and backpacking on numerous trails, dispersed camping throughout the backcountry, fishing in streams and lakes, scenic driving routes, and hunting during designated seasons. Winter brings snow to higher elevations, opening the forest to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Access is straightforward from surrounding communities, though weather plays a decisive role in when you can visit comfortably. Summer and early fall—roughly June through September—offer the most reliable conditions and the fullest range of activities. Spring and late fall are accessible but can be unpredictable. Winter snows close many higher routes and forest roads, making that season viable only for those prepared for significant snow and limited access. Plan ahead for permits, seasonal road closures, and current conditions with the Forest Service before your trip.
