About Prescott National Forest

Prescott National Forest spans over one million acres across central Arizona, offering diverse recreation across a landscape of mixed forest, woodland, and open terrain. The forest supports hiking and backpacking on numerous trails, dispersed camping throughout its backcountry, fishing in streams and lakes, and scenic drives on forest roads that wind through the ponderosa pine and mixed-conifer zones. Hunting is permitted in designated areas during established seasons, and mountain biking opportunities exist on forest roads and select trails.

Visitation patterns follow Arizona's elevation and climate: the forest sits at higher elevation, making it coolest and most comfortable in summer and early fall, when daytime temperatures are moderate and overnight cooling is pronounced. Spring and late fall are accessible but can be unpredictable. Winter brings snow at higher elevations, which can close some roads and trails; lower-elevation areas may remain passable but conditions are variable. Access is straightforward via forest roads and highways, though some dispersed camping and trailheads may be rough or rough-and-ready. Call ahead or check with the Forest Service to confirm current conditions, especially in shoulder seasons and winter.
