About Okanogan National Forest

Okanogan National Forest spans nearly 640,000 acres across north-central Washington, offering a mix of forested terrain, meadows, and streams in a landscape suited to both day visits and extended backcountry trips. The forest supports a full range of recreation: hiking and backpacking on established trails, dispersed camping throughout its public lands, fishing in creeks and alpine lakes, scenic driving on forest roads, hunting in designated seasons, and horseback riding on select routes. Winter brings snowfall to higher elevations, opening terrain for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, though many high passes and trails become snow-bound or impassable from late fall through spring.

Access is straightforward from nearby towns and highways. Summer and early fall—roughly June through September—are the prime seasons for most activities, when snow melts, trails are clear, and the weather is stable. Spring and late fall can work for lower-elevation recreation but weather is less predictable. Winter recreation is possible in some areas but requires avalanche awareness and proper preparation. As a multiple-use National Forest, the land permits a broad range of activities under Forest Service management, making it a practical destination for campers, anglers, and hikers seeking public backcountry without the restrictions of wilderness or park designations.
