About Mendocino National Forest
Mendocino National Forest spans nearly half a million acres across California's interior, offering a mix of public lands open to dispersed recreation. The forest supports hiking and backpacking on a network of trails, along with dispersed camping throughout much of the backcountry. Fishing opportunities exist in streams and lakes within the forest boundary. Hunters use the forest seasonally, and scenic driving is possible on roads threading through the property. The landscape varies with elevation and aspect, supporting mixed forest and chaparral communities.
Access depends on which roads and trailheads you're targeting; many are passable year-round, though winter storms can close higher elevations and rough forest roads. Spring through fall offers the most reliable conditions, with summer the peak season. Autumn extends the accessible window before winter weather returns.
