About Little Missouri National Grassland

Little Missouri National Grassland spans over 800,000 acres across North Dakota, offering a vast working landscape of native prairie, badlands, and scattered buttes managed by the Forest Service. The grassland supports diverse recreation across its open terrain: hiking and backpacking on trails that wind through rolling prairie and badland formations, dispersed camping on public land, fishing in small streams and water bodies, and scenic driving on roads that cross the grassland. Hunting is popular here during seasons for upland game and big game, and the landscape is also valued for wildlife viewing and photography, particularly of native prairie species and geological features. Access is straightforward via county roads and Forest Service roads, though the region experiences genuine winter conditions from December through March, making spring through fall the practical visiting window. Summer and early fall offer the most comfortable conditions for outdoor recreation.
