Grand River National Grassland

Grand River National Grassland spans 140,340 acres across South Dakota and is managed by the Forest Service as multiple-use public land. The landscape consists of native prairie and grassland typical of the region, offering a quieter alternative to more heavily developed public lands. Visitors can fish in the grassland's waters, hunt game birds and deer during season, explore via scenic drives on county and forest roads, and camp dispersed throughout the property. Trails and hiking opportunities exist but are modest in scope and popularity.

Access is straightforward from surrounding communities, with most recreation concentrated in the warmer months from late spring through early fall. Winter conditions can be harsh and limiting. The grassland is best visited during summer and early autumn when weather is stable and all facilities and roads are fully accessible. Dispersed camping is permitted across the property, making it an economical base for exploring the area.
