About Black Hills National Forest
Black Hills National Forest spans nearly 1.2 million acres across South Dakota, offering a mix of public land recreation in a forested landscape. The forest supports hiking and backpacking on a network of trails, dispersed camping throughout the backcountry, fishing in streams and lakes, and scenic driving on roads that wind through the terrain. Hunting is permitted in designated seasons. Winter brings snow that enables snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, though access can be limited during heavy snow periods.
Visitor access is straightforward year-round, though conditions vary significantly by season. Summer and early fall are the prime months for trail use and camping. Spring and late fall are accessible but cooler and wetter. Winter snow can close or restrict some roads and higher-elevation areas, making lower-elevation routes and valley drives more reliable. Plan ahead for dispersed camping and check current conditions with the Forest Service, especially if you're targeting specific trails or roads during shoulder seasons.
