This compact range is characterized by rugged, rocky terrain with steep canyons and high, exposed ridges. The geology is primarily sedimentary, with outcroppings of sandstone, shale, and limestone. Elevations range from around 6,000 feet in the foothills to just over 8,500 feet at the highest peaks. The climate is semi-arid, with hot, dry summers and mild, snowy winters.
