Columbia Slough Watershed Council offers guided canoe paddles on the Columbia Slough for school groups in grades 5 and up. Participants paddle in stable bimaran boats (two 12-foot canoes strapped together) from three launch sites: Kelley Point Park at the confluence with the Willamette River, Whitaker Ponds in the Middle Slough, and the Portland Water Bureau Groundwater Pump Station in the Upper Slough. Each 2-hour paddle accommodates full classes of about 25 students with one adult per six students, all wearing provided life jackets. CSWC staff captain each boat and lead the paddles, which are offered during spring and fall on the 19-mile main channel of the 60-mile watershed that supports river otters, painted turtles, and bald eagles. Paddles prioritize Title I schools in Portland Public Schools, Parkrose, Reynolds, and Gresham-Barlow districts, as well as nonprofits serving Title I students. CSWC staff are certified in First Aid and CPR.
