Zavala

Zavala is an abandoned settlement in Jasper County, Texas, with roots stretching back to 1834. The town took its name from empresario Lorenzo de Zavala and grew up on land belonging to Thomas Huling along the banks of the Angelina River. At its modest peak, roughly 40 families called it home, supporting themselves through farming and logging.

By 1878 the community had dropped off county records entirely, and the site has been uninhabited since. Visitors today should not confuse it with the city of Zavalla, a separate and active community located about 20 miles to the northwest in Angelina County. Little formal infrastructure exists at the historic site, making it primarily a destination for history-minded travelers and photographers drawn to the Angelina River setting.
