About Vandalia

Vandalia is a small unincorporated community in Valley County, Montana, with roots going back to 1904, when a post office and store were established along the Great Northern Railway's Hi-Line corridor. Its early economy centered on brick manufacturing, and the bricks produced here found their way into public buildings throughout Montana.

Today Vandalia lends its name to a nearby dam on the Milk River that serves the Glasgow Irrigation District — one of the more tangible legacies of the community's presence in the region. Visitors coming to see the townsite itself will find a sparsely settled, quiet rural setting rather than a dramatic collection of ruins. It is the kind of place that rewards those interested in Montana railroad history and the quiet story of small agricultural-era communities, but expectations should be modest.
