Tolar

Tolar is a ghost town in northern Roosevelt County, New Mexico, sitting at the junction of State Road 86 with U.S. Routes 60 and 84, roughly midway between Fort Sumner to the west and Melrose to the east. Its origins trace to 1907, when it was established as a stop along the Belen Cutoff of the Santa Fe Railway. The town's most dramatic moment came in 1944, when a munitions-laden train exploded there — an event recorded as the largest accidental explosion in New Mexico history. Little more than the road junction and flat surrounding terrain mark the spot today, and visitors should expect a sparse, open landscape rather than standing structures or developed facilities.
