Pony

Pony is a small unincorporated community tucked along the eastern edge of the Tobacco Root Mountains in Madison County, Montana. With a 2020 census population of 127, it occupies a curious middle ground between living settlement and preserved relic — small enough to feel forgotten, yet intact enough to reward a curious visitor.

The heart of the townsite is the Pony Historic District, a 192-acre area containing 95 contributing buildings recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Gold drove the community's founding and growth, and the built environment that survives reflects that era. Walking the district offers a rare chance to read an entire frontier gold-era community rather than a single isolated structure.

For visitors, Pony is best approached as a sightseeing and photography destination. The collection of historic buildings is the draw, and the mountain setting adds scenic context. Access is via rural roads, and Montana winters can make the area difficult to reach; late spring through early fall represents the most practical window for a visit.
