About Plana

Plana is a ghost town in Cambria Township, Brown County, South Dakota. Founded in 1887, the community once supported three grain elevators and a railroad depot, growing into a functioning village before a fire destroyed its general store in 1927 and set the town on a long decline.

By 1994, only three structures remained standing: a former community hall, a school, and the Welsh Presbyterian Church. Visitors today find a quiet, largely vanished settlement where those weathered remnants offer a glimpse into the area's agricultural past.

Access is best in the warmer months, as South Dakota winters can make rural roads difficult or impassable. Come prepared for an open, remote setting with no visitor facilities.
