Lost Cove

Tucked into Poplar Gorge above the Nolichucky River along the Tennessee–North Carolina border, Lost Cove is a ghost town in Yancey County whose origins trace back to just before the Civil War. Its founding resident was Morgan Bailey, a soldier of the 3rd North Carolina Mounted Infantry, who established what would grow into a small but self-sustaining community built around logging, railroading, farming, and moonshine-making. At its busiest, the settlement supported roughly 100 residents living in 13 to 15 houses.

Visitors today reach an isolated hollow where the community once stood. The remote gorge setting and the modest scale of what was here mean expectations should be realistic — this is a place to absorb quiet history rather than walk among dramatic ruins. The rugged terrain and lack of maintained infrastructure make the approach demanding, and the site is best attempted in late spring through early fall when conditions are manageable.
