About Ingomar

Ingomar is an unincorporated community in Rosebud County, Montana, sitting along U.S. Route 12. It came into existence in 1908 as a station stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad while that line was being built across Montana. The surrounding land drew waves of homesteaders in the years after the railroad was finished, but the area proved too dry and harsh for farming to take hold, and the population had largely collapsed by the 1920s.

Today Ingomar stands as a quiet remnant of that short-lived settlement era. Visitors arriving via Route 12 will find a sparse, wind-swept community with the weathered traces of its early twentieth-century past. It is the kind of place best appreciated by those interested in Montana history and the human story of agricultural failure on difficult land.
