Iatan

About 20 miles west of Colorado City in Mitchell County, Texas, Iatan is a ghost town with a quirky origin story. It began in 1881 as a stop along the Texas and Pacific Railroad and for a time carried the alternate name Vista. The town even applied for its own post office — and that process gave rise to the name most people know today. Local tradition holds that the original name was "Satan's Flat," but when postal officials processed the application, the leading "S" was misread as an "I," and Iatan stuck.
